Travel to anywhere is challenging at the moment. The rules are changing rapidly and people do not want to be caught unaware when this happens. For the latest travel requirements to Thailand please do your due diligence. We will update this post and our site as changes become available.

Thailand is a popular travel destination. The people are friendly. The country has been praised by the WHO for its handling of the pandemic and is a safe place to go in a world where safe places are hard to find.

The Requirements to Travel to Thailand are listed in this post as of February 25, 2022.

With any international travel at the moment we urge you to be sure before leaving your home country, check with your local Consulate or Embassy to be certain there are no last minute changes before you leave.

Note: this post is now dated – Thailand has dropped the Test and Go and the Sandbox programs. Everyone is welcome to travel to Thailand both vaccinated and un-vaccinated tourists. For more details. Travel to Thailand Nov in May 2022.

Updated requirements May first 2022

  • Thailand has dropped the Test and Go and Sandbox Programs
  • You must still register with the Thailand Pass system, prior to travel
  • Thailand has reduced the travel insurance to $10,000.00 USD
  • Vaccinated persons are free to leave the airport and go anywhere
  • Un-vaccinated persons must still quarantine for 5 days and take an RT-PCR test on day 4

General Requirements as of February 22, 2022

Currently there are 3 programs available for foreigners to enter Thailand. They are:

  1. Test and Go
  2. Sandbox
  3. Quarantine in Alternative Quarantine Hotel or Hospital

You will need to apply for a Thailand Pass before traveling to Thailand. You can apply for the Thailand Pass using the Link provided.

Visa

Do you need a visa? Travelers from the following 64 countries are not required to obtain a visa before arriving in Thailand.

All other countries are required to obtain a visa before applying to travel to Thailand.

Test and Go – Available to All Countries

Note: The Test and Go program is available for persons who have completed the following:

  1. Fully Vaccinated (at least 2 vaccine shots) at least 14 days before departure.
  2. Approved COVID-19 Insurance for your entire stay in Thailand.
  3. A negative Covid-19 PCR test, issued within 72 hours prior to departure.
  4. Paid hotel reservation confirmation for Day 1.
  • Day 1 includes airport transfer plus hotel and RT-PCR test fees.

Sandbox – Available to All countries

Note: the Sandbox program is available for persons who have completed the following:

  1. Fully vaccinated (at least 2 vaccine shots) at least 14 days before departure.
  2. Approved COVID-19 Insurance for your entire stay in Thailand.
  3. A negative Covid-19 PCR test, issued within 72 hours prior to departure.
  4. Booking for at least 7 days in an approved SHA Extra+ or Alternative Quarantine Hotel/Hospital


The Sandbox program is available for 6 locations as of February 01, 2022.

  1. Phuket
  2. Krabi
  3. Phang-Na
  4. SuratThani – (Ko Samui, Ko Pha-ngan, Ko Tao only)
  5. Chonburi – (Banglamung, Pattaya, Sri Racha, Koh Sichang & Sattahip Na Jomtien & Bang Saray only).
  6. Trat (Koh Chang) only.

Quarantine – Available to All Countries

All Travelers

Travelers from other nations around the globe (including the 64 nations listed in the table above) who are not fully vaccinated will be required to stay in quarantine for 10 days as per Thailand CCSA guidelines. They must stay in ASQ hotels (Accredited State Quarantine.

The restrictions that were in place on some African nations were lifted on January 11th.

ASQ/ASLQ Hotels

There are many ASQ hotels available in all Sandbox locations. All ASQ locations are at the travelers expense (for non-Thai nationals). ASQ hotels and hospitals have been approved by The Ministry of Public Health and The Ministry of Defense.

ASLQ – refers to quarantine facilities that are outside of Bangkok metropolitan area.

Current timelines for quarantine for un-vaccinated, or partially vaccinated travelers is 10 days. Home stay quarantine is not available at this time for travelers entering the Kingdom.

The cost of a ASQ or and ASLQ stay varies depending on the location chosen. The cost may vary from ~28,000 to over 200,000 baht.

What is included in the ASQ package.

Normally the hotel will pick you up from the airport and transport you to the hotel. Three meals a day are included along with WiFi for your room. A nurse will be available to take your temperature and check your health 2 times per day. Two COVID-19 tests will be administered during your stay. One on arrival and one a day before departure.

Before Leaving Your Home Country

  • Fill in your online Thailand Pass registration information (5 to 7 days before departure).
  • Book your flight to Thailand.
  • Book your SHA Extra+ Sandbox Hotel or your ASQ hotel.
  • Get your COVID insurance package ($20,000.00 USD minimum coverage). As of March 1st bookings.
  • Book your COVID tests for the sandbox program – carry a copy with you. (if applicable).
  • Get your COVID-19 RT-PCR test done within 72 hours of departure. A LAB test, not a home test.
  • Carry a copy of your confirmed hotel booking.
  • Carry a copy of your flight reservation.
  • Carry a copy of proof of vaccination (if applicable).

On Arrival In Thailand

Follow all immigration procedures at the airport.

Your hotel will have arranged a pick up for you at the airport. This is part of the Quarantine package.

Continue to your hotel and settle in. Your first COVID test will be on day 1 of your stay. You will be restricted to your hotel room until you have passed this test. Your second test will be on day 8 of a 10-day quarantine.

Negative Test

You will be required to stay inside your hotel room for the first 2 to 3 days until the results of your first COVID test are known.

Once you have passed the first COVID test you will be allowed outside to a designated walking area. The size of that area and the amenities available will depend on your ASQ package.

Do your due diligence here, there are many different packages available now for coming to Thailand.

Sharing a Room

You will only be able to share a room with family members, guests are not allowed.

Alcohol in your room

The hotel will not provide any alcohol to your room. You may be able to bring some with you (duty-free).

Food and Water

The hotel will provide drinking water for you as part of the ASQ package.

Three meals per day are provided as part of the ASQ package.

You are not allowed to order in food from restaurants, though I have heard of it being done.

Housekeeping

Most ASQ hotel provide a housekeeping service every 2 days once your first COVID test has been done. Depending on the property you may be held in a waiting area or you may be provide another room to rest in while your room is cleaned.
